Our jointly proposed project, the “Metamorphic Lavatory,” developed in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), has been selected as a new research project for FY2026 under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s (MLIT) Transportation Technology Development Promotion Program.
The Transportation Technology Development Promotion Program is a competitive funding scheme that supports innovative technologies from research and development through practical implementation, contributing to safer, more comfortable transportation systems and the reduction of environmental impact.
Through previous research activities, we have conducted user evaluations and validation studies to confirm the effectiveness of the concept. One of the key features of the Metamorphic Lavatory is its improved accessibility for wheelchair users by addressing the space constraints and usability challenges commonly associated with conventional aircraft lavatories.
As the next step toward implementation in commercial aircraft, this research project will evaluate the feasibility of the concept under actual operational conditions, including structural and operational requirements. Leveraging our expertise in aircraft interior product development, we will continue to advance this initiative in collaboration with JAXA.
We remain committed to improving accessibility within aircraft cabins and contributing to the realization of an inclusive society in which everyone, regardless of disability, can travel by air with confidence and peace of mind.
